The car, based off the 1967 Ford Mustang, offered a more luxurious, refinded vehicle with more European styling than most cars available at the time. The car was designed to be a mid-level entry between the Mustang and the Ford Thunderbird, being influenced heavily by both. 1968 did not see many changes, aside from more engine options. 1969 brought a convertible option, as well as a facelift and a variety of performance options. 1970 ended up being the last year of hideaway headlights, as well as the last year of the Eliminator package. The 1971 Mercury Cougar received a newly restyled front end with the four headlights now exposed and recessed. There were two body styles, a hardtop coupe and a convertible, available on both the base series and the XR-7 Series. The base engine on both series including a V-8 that displaced 351 cubic-inches and offered 240 horsepower. Several other V8’s were available, including a 351- and 429 cubic-inch units. The 429ci Super Cobra Jet with four-barrel carburetors offered 370 horsepower. The base engine was a three-speed manual, with a four-speed manual with Hurst Shifter and a SelectShift automatic offered as optional equipment. Other styling changes for 1971 including signal lights that now wrapped around the front fenders. The center grille with its vertical bars was framed in chrome with an ornament placed in its center. The Cougar came standard from the factory with high-back bucket seats, cigar lighter, courtesy lights, glove box, consolette with illuminated ashtray, concealed windshield wipers, and Flow-Thru ventilation system. By the end of 1973, the Cougar would become a large car, comparable to the Ford Elite, and would loose its “Pony Car” styling for good.

Financing

Finance rates as low as 8.9%.

We know that classic car financing can pose a unique challenge. Although a vintage or exotic car can be an excellent investment, some financial institutions attempt to apply standard “used car” rules for financing a classic car, which in many cases can make loan approval difficult.

We work closely with many banking institutions that understand and recognize the collector value of classic cars and view them as an investment, which allows us to help you get the financing you need so that you can have the car you have dreamed of.
